A round-up of week one of unemployment
My first seven days of horror in case you missed them
Kia ora koutou
I hope everyone has been enjoying their spooky season.
As we all know, Halloween is traditionally celebrated as a springtime holiday in a tempermental Te Whanganui-a-Tara where each day alternates hot and cold. This was before it was corrupted by sinister northern hemisphere interests and their autumnal (or ‘fall’ if you’re nasty) agenda.
Befitting of a season of rebirth, new life and ducklings, I’ve been watching a bunch of scary movies. Some of you have been following along with me but I haven’t been sending out daily updates since I wouldn’t want to risk overburdening you!
So, in case you’re interested, please see below a round-up of my first week of viewing:
- Day 1 - underseen ‘cinema of unease’ chiller, Jack Be Nimble (1993)
- Day 2 - my first (and only Haitian) foray into voodoo, The Loves of a Zombie or can a Zombie be President? (2010)
- Day 3 - petrifying Poe picture, The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
- Day 4 - sweaty voodoo noir, Angel Heart (1987)
- Day 5 - apocalyptic Californian masterpiece, Messiah of Evil (1974)
- Day 6 - Amblin-inspired jiāngshī romp, Mr Vampire II (1986)
- Day 7 - the Trans-Siberian Thing, Horror Express (1972)
Enjoy! (or ignore if you subscribed for political takes which I promise will be forthcoming)

Note that next week’s viewing may be a bit disrupted as I will be up in Tāmaki Makaurau for the 24Hr Movie Marathon. I should be able to do my viewing homework each day but may not get time to publish a piece right away so please bear with me!
Ngā mihi
Johnny
